　ドイツって最盛期は欧州のほぼ全土を手中に収めてたんでしょ？
　なんで最後はそんなに悲惨だったの？
　一番の原因はなに？

　【回答】
　国力に対して，兵力を過剰に展開しすぎたため．
　欧州全土を手中に収めていたからと言って，占領地からは義勇兵をわずかに募るが精一杯だし，産業界からの収奪だって限界はある．
　フランスにそれなりの兵力を残したまま，バルカンだ，北アフリカだ，ソ連だと手を広げすぎた．
　ソ連の人口と生産力だけで，ドイツのそれらを遥かに凌駕するというのに，そこへアメリカが参戦したのでは，もうかないっこない．

　ちなみに1942年秋，東部戦線はカフカスに攻め込んでいて，北アフリカはエルアラメイン前面にまで英軍を押し込んでいたころが，ナチ・ドイツが最大版図となった時期だ．
　ところが，どこもかしこも戦況はこう着状態に陥る．
　どの戦線でも戦線を突破するには，「最後の一大隊（ラスト・バタリオン）が足りない」と囁かれるようになる．
　現実には，人も足りなきゃ，兵器も足りず，補給もおっつかない状況を極めてしまう．
　そして，そこからどこもかしこも負け続けになっていく（部分部分で反攻に成功はするが）．

　で，43年から44年に，全戦線で一気に押し返され，1945年にはドイツ本土が戦場と化す．
　ヒトラーは演説で「最後の大隊（ラスト・バタリオン）が現れ，敵を殲滅するであろう」と述べるが，ついぞラスト・バタリオンは現れず，ガソリンをかけられて死体を焼かれるハメになっちまったというわけ．

　このラスト・バタリオンという言葉が，ナチ残党伝説で象徴的に使われるようになったのは，また別のお話．
